Celebrating Resilience Through the Lens: Capturing the Magic of CLDF's Breakaway Trips

The Children’s Liver Disease Foundation (CLDF) recently reached out to find a photographer to cover their first major event since the easing of Covid-19 restrictions. This incredible charity extends support to children and their families dealing with various forms of liver disease. In their efforts to celebrate the resilience of these remarkable children, the charity organizes special away days or residential trips.

The highlight of these excursions, known as 'Breakaway' trips, involves overnight stays for the children, complete with engaging outdoor activities during the day. I've had the privilege of capturing the magic of two of these events already and am eagerly anticipating many more opportunities. During both occasions, the children showcased their resourcefulness by building simple shelters using logs and branches gathered from the forest floor.

In addition to shelter-building, the children have the chance to challenge themselves and step outside their comfort zones through various activities. From navigating high-rope courses to preparing pigeon for dinner, engaging in archery, sledging, and more, these activities create unforgettable moments for the children.

One of the most heartwarming aspects of these trips is witnessing the camaraderie among the children. Their infectious humour and mutual support shine through, creating a perfect backdrop for capturing magical pictures. During my second visit, the parents joined in the adventures as the group consisted of younger children. It was a joy to see them embrace the experience of sleeping rough and participating in the activities, all while radiating positivity.

The captured moments from these events find a meaningful place on the charity's website and in their publications, serving as a source of inspiration for other families within the support network. The dedication and care provided by the CLDF staff make it evident that this is more than just a charity—it's a community that rejoices in the triumphs of families who have faced the toughest of times. I eagerly look forward to the next event, anticipating more heart-warming stories and magical moments to unfold.
