Journey Through Innovation: Photographing Highlights from the MTA Conference Event Coverage
Before embarking on my journey as a full-time photographer, I spent 17 rewarding years in education, transitioning from a teaching assistant to a teacher and eventually a headteacher. In the classroom, I found joy in not only fostering academic growth but also in sharing my love for music. On rare occasions, I brought my guitar into class, aiming to inspire a passion for music and even co-create songs with the students. Though unsure if the children enjoyed it as much as I did or if my self-taught musical blunders dampened the experience, it was a cherished tradition, especially during farewells to our year sixes.
The intersection of my teaching background and newfound photography career became apparent when the Music Teacher's Association sought a photographer for their annual conference in May '22. It seemed like a golden opportunity to blend my two worlds seamlessly, capturing the essence of an event dedicated to the art and education of music.
The conference unfolded at the breathtaking St Edward’s School in Oxford, a venue that reflected the utmost in grace and boasted well-mannered, respectful pupils. Spanning three days, the event featured keynote speeches from the esteemed Yolanda Brown and Caius Lee, both musical talents with captivating stories to share. The conference comprised an array of exhibitors showcasing innovative approaches to music education across curriculum stages, live musical performances, and insightful sessions equipping teachers with ideas and strategies to enhance their practice.
Given the task to encapsulate the diversity of music and its possibilities, I embarked on a visual journey, documenting the vibrant tapestry of musical inspiration that the MTA passionately offers to students. The richness of this diversity manifested through the exhibitors, recognized by the MTA for their pivotal role in education. Music, as an influential force shaping lives academically and socially, was beautifully articulated by Caius Lee in his keynote speech. Yet, the heartbeat of the event resided in the dedicated teachers brought together by the MTA, skilled educators whose passion and expertise spanned various experiences, creating a tapestry of inspiration for students.
Throughout the day, I bore witness to a kaleidoscope of musical genres—pop, classical, opera, film scores, and more. The power of music to transcend boundaries and touch every soul became evident, reaffirming that music is a universal language.
The conference culminated in resounding success, concluding with a black-tie dinner event and joyous celebrations. Kudos to the MTA and all the teachers in schools—your dedication is truly inspiring. As I reflect on the vibrant melodies that filled the air, I find myself rekindling the urge to pick up my guitar once more, grateful for the harmonious intersection of my two passions.
